Feature 3 addresses a tension every teacher of English Learners faces:
How do you teach grade level content to a student whose English proficiency is several levels below grade?
The answer is not to give that student lower grade content.
A 10th grader who is a beginning English Learner still needs 10th grade content concepts. They need the same rigorous, age appropriate material as their peers, delivered with the language supports that make it accessible.
This is where Feature 3 connects with Feature 5: adapting content for proficiency levels .
The content stays age appropriate. The delivery gets adapted.
You do not give a high school student a children's book because their English is developing. You give them a grade level text with scaffolding, including pre taught vocabulary , graphic organizers, visual supports, comprehensible input strategies , and structured partner discussions.
Should English Learners receive below grade level content?
No. SIOP® Feature 3 requires that content concepts be appropriate for students' age and educational background. English Learners should access grade level content with appropriate language scaffolding , not simplified or lower grade materials.
Our English Learner Institute shows teachers how to maintain rigor while scaffolding access.
